Addictive Painkillers

Many different painkillers are addictive but probably the most addictive are the opiates.  Opiates are a type of drug that is derived from the poppy plant or which has been synthesized to act as if it were a derivative of the poppy plant.  Some of the most common opiate painkillers that cause dire addictions include Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone and Morphine.  There are literally hundreds of different types of painkillers on the market, and while most of them do carry the potential to cause addiction, none have the stronghold that opiates do. Types of Painkillers

Hundreds if not thousands of types of painkillers exist on the market today but the most common include narcotics such as opiates, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), and non-narcotic paracetamol based drugs also known as acetaminophen.  Not all of these are addictive but in most cases, the narcotic versions of painkillers have a high potential for causing addiction and thus a high potential for abuse.  Read more about the types of painkillers here.

Addictive Pills

In addition to painkillers, there are many other types of pills that can become habit forming.  Some of the most common addictive pills on the market besides painkillers include benzodiazepines, barbiturates and diet pills. Not every individual who uses pills will become addicted but some people do carry a higher potential for becoming an addict than others.  It’s important to keep in mind that even those who take pills as prescribed are at a risk of becoming mildly or moderately addicted to the drugs and could suffer from very dire consequences as a result of their pill use.  Addictive pills are commonly prescribed to treat a number of conditions including anxiety, mental illness, seizures, and pain.
